Flying with a newborn? Deep breath, it’s easier than you think! Babies are often better fliers than we give them credit for, and a little preparation can go a long, long way.

Here are 8 simple, repeat-worthy tips to make airline travel with your newborn smoother, and a whole lot more doable.

Pack an “Essentials” Pouch: Before you show up to the airport, prep a small pouch or ziplock with what you’ll need immediately. Think: a pacifier, a bottle or boob-access, a burp cloth, a small toy or teether, a change of clothes (for baby and you), and a couple of diapers with wipes. Once boarding, keep it in the seat pocket or under the seat in front of you so you’re not digging through an overstuffed carry-on mid-flight

Consider Boarding Last: While airlines often invite families to pre-board, waiting until the very end can actually be a game-changer, especially with a newborn. Why? Less time sitting in a cramped seat, fewer chances for a diaper blowout before takeoff, and less wrangling while everyone else boards.

If you’re flying with a partner, send one person ahead with the gear while the other stays back with baby until the last call.

Feed During Takeoff and Landing: Sucking helps relieve pressure in your baby’s ears during altitude changes. Nurse, bottle-feed, or offer a pacifier during takeoff and landing to help your baby stay comfortable, and reduce crying caused by ear pressure.

If they’re sleeping through it, let them sleep with a pacifier (and celebrate that win)!

Use a Soft Baby Carrier: Wearing your baby through the airport = hands free, less stress, and a calmer baby. Bonus: it keeps them snuggled and helps them sleep. You’ll need to take them out during takeoff and landing, but carriers are perfect for boarding, security, and walking the terminal. My 2 favorite carriers are the Ergobaby Embrace and the Artipoppe Zeitgeist!

Gate Check the Stroller and Car Seat: If you feel more comfortable with a stroller, most airlines let you check both for free. Roll up to the gate with your stroller system, then gate-check it right before boarding. It keeps baby secure through the airport and gives you somewhere to stash your diaper bag while waiting to board.

Pro tip: Use a travel bag to protect your gear from damage and dirt in the cargo hold. Amazon has plenty of options!

Don’t Overpack the Diaper Bag: Bring the essentials, not the nursery. Here’s a quick checklist:
– 4–5 diapers
– Wipes (travel pack)
– 2 onesies + 1 sleeper
– Extra shirt for you
– Feeding supplies (bottles, a formula dispenser, a thermal mug of warm water, nursing cover if you want)
– Burp cloths
– 1–2 small toys or teethers
– Ziplock or wet bag for dirty clothes

Ask for Help (Seriously): Gate agents, flight attendants, even fellow parents; they’re often more willing to help than you think. Ask for an empty row if the flight isn’t full. Accept offers to hold something while you get settled. You don’t have to do it all solo.

Don’t Stress the Crying: Babies cry. People survive. If your baby fusses mid-flight, you’re not a bad parent, you’re a normal one. Most passengers are more understanding than you’d expect (especially if they’ve been there before). And those who aren’t? They’ll live.

Your job is to stay calm and care for your baby, not to manage everyone else’s comfort.

Final Thought: You’re Doing Better Than You Think: Air travel with a newborn isn’t easy, but it’s absolutely doable. With a little prep and a lot of grace (for your baby and yourself), you can make the experience smoother and even empowering.

Next time you fly with your little one, pull out this list. You’ve already got the hardest part down: showing up!
